Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Community radio has emerged as a vital tool for promoting awareness, especially in local and rural settings, where access to mainstream media may be limited. In Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, community radio stations serve as an essential medium for disseminating information about local events, cultural festivals, health campaigns, and political gatherings. The unique ability of community radio to engage audiences in their local languages and address context-specific issues makes it a powerful platform for fostering event awareness.
According to recent studies, community radio not only serves as a tool for information dissemination but also facilitates dialogue between event organizers and community members (Adeyanju & Bello, 2024). With its grassroots approach, it helps bridge the gap between urban-centric event campaigns and rural audiences, ensuring inclusivity and participation. However, the effectiveness of community radio in creating event awareness depends on various factors, including programming quality, language relevance, and the frequency of event-related broadcasts.
In Bauchi Local Government Area, where cultural, economic, and political activities play a significant role in the community’s social fabric, the role of community radio in amplifying event awareness cannot be overstated. This study aims to evaluate the influence of community radio on event awareness, focusing on its reach, effectiveness, and challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of community radio in Bauchi Local Government Area, many events struggle to achieve high attendance and participation, raising concerns about the effectiveness of communication strategies employed by event organizers. Issues such as limited broadcast reach, inconsistent programming, and lack of engaging content have been identified as potential barriers to effective event promotion. Furthermore, event organizers often underestimate the potential of community radio, opting for mainstream media channels that may not resonate with local audiences.
This study seeks to address these challenges by evaluating how community radio influences event awareness in Bauchi Local Government Area. It aims to provide actionable insights for optimizing community radio programming to ensure maximum reach and engagement for local events.
